The study population consisted of consecutive adult patients aged 40-59 years with chronic prostatitis, bacterial meningitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and infectious diarrhea, who were diagnosed according to the CDC guidelines.
The study was conducted according to the Good Clinical Practice guidelines, and all patients underwent standard medical care.
The primary objective was to determine whether Sildenafil citrate could be used as an alternative treatment for the treatment of the following bacterial diseases: chronic prostatitis, bacterial meningitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and infectious diarrhea.
The secondary objective was to evaluate whether the antibiotic resistance rate of Sildenafil citrate and its components could be reduced by the addition of other active ingredients or by the use of conventional antibiotics. The study was carried out in two phases. In the first phase, patients were randomly assigned to receive either 100 mg of Sildenafil citrate or 100 mg of Sildenafil citrate+clavulanic acid (as a control group) for 12 weeks. Then, patients were treated with either 100 mg of Sildenafil citrate or 100 mg of Sildenafil citrate+clavulanic acid for the same period. The antibiotic susceptibility was assessed using the Kirby-Bauer method.
The secondary endpoints were the antibiotic resistance rate of Sildenafil citrate and its components in the treatment of the following bacterial diseases: chronic prostatitis, bacterial meningitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and infectious diarrhea.
The mean age of the study population was 42.7 ± 5.1 years, with a high percentage of males, with a mean BMI of 27.8 ± 4.1 kg/m2 and a high incidence of obesity. There were no significant differences in the sex ratios between the study groups. The mean age of the patients in the treatment group was 61.9 ± 4.2 years, with a high percentage of males with a mean BMI of 32.2 ± 4.6 kg/m2 and a high incidence of obesity.
In the two phases of the study, the antibiotic resistance rate of Sildenafil citrate and its components was assessed according to the results of the Kirby-Bauer method. The antibiotic susceptibility of Sildenafil citrate was found to be significantly higher than that of its components in the treatment of the following bacterial diseases: chronic prostatitis, bacterial meningitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and infectious diarrhea. In the treatment of the bacterial meningitis, the antibiotic resistance rate was higher than that of its components in the treatment of the following infectious diarrhea: community-acquired pneumonia, and infectious diarrhea.
The mean antibiotic dose of Sildenafil citrate was 10.3 ± 2.2 mg/kg in the treatment group, and that of Sildenafil citrate+clavulanic acid was 7.6 ± 1.6 mg/kg in the treatment group. The antibiotic dose of Sildenafil citrate+clavulanic acid was significantly higher than that of Sildenafil citrate in the treatment of the following bacterial diseases: chronic prostatitis, bacterial meningitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and infectious diarrhea.
